Orion/Members' Exhibition

Presenting: my first finished painting since graduating!! Woo!!
Orion
is his name.

Started over the summer with a form outlined in modeling paste, I finally got to working on it a few months after moving.

I went through a lot of emotional pushes and pulls with the piece; feeling like I was trying to revive all the techniques I had taught myself and refined over the last year while drawing in new materials (plastic). Working with acrylic was frustrating, since I had just spent so much time being intimately familiar with oil paint; I felt like I was learning how to paint all over again. (Admittedly, the acrylics I was working with are crappy)

As far as idea and concept goes, I felt at the lost. Orion gained his name from the Orion Nebula, its form mostly. The form came from somewhere in my subconscious...honestly, it feels almost womb-like. When I started painting again I turned to the gigantic Universe book for inspiration and realized home closely my form resembled the nebula. The color took form from there.

The plastic was a new thing for me and I am experimenting with it in some other piece right now. Considering environmentalism, reuse and recycling, the worthlessness of trash and of plastic, human waste and the bastardization of Mother Earth, etc.

But what about the Daoist ideals I held so dear? Well, I have not abandon them, as they have I gotten me where I am today and everyday before and after today, etc. But just how they will tie into this new line of work..of ideas...I just don't now where I am going from here....

But this painting is a start:

It is currently in RoCo's 20th Annual Members' Exhibition. Look at the professional looking tag! Nothing I presented in school was labeled that nicely. And the yellow dot? Someone liked it enough to vote for it for the Members' Choice Award! Granted, several other pieces have 4-6 dots, but it felt good to know that at least one person liked it.

And here is the wall it is on and the other wonderful work it shares space with:

White Matter

I watched a short documentary last night on memory. The shitty screen shots above are representations of white matter in our brain. White matter is the fleshy parts of the brain that builds connections between the gray matter. The connections that help us to learn and make connections as we go through our day to day lives.
They are the strings, the source of one form on human inter-connectivity.

Considering some quiet watercolors, in muted colors, in relation to this idea and imagery.

Workspace resolutions..

Gettin' fuckin' organized..yea!
After rearranging the couches, hanging a milk crate on the wall, and condensing some stuff I have some more space to work. I also hooked up that light...and look how much more fucking light I have!! Holy shit!!
I also have an office chair Ben found in the basement (not pictured) so I'll have some more back support. woo!

another painting in a home

New Painting!

I (barely) started this painting over the summer, so here it is at its completed state. I'm going to be submitting this piece in RoCo's Members Exhibition.
(Apologies for the shitty lighting...I'll take a better shot of this, probably when its in the gallery)

Process shot, still wet:

When I propped the painting up after one session, the painting dripping off the canvas made some sweet patterns!

Artist process shots

When I first moved to Rochester, I spent most of my days obsessively trolling craigslist for jobs, artist opportunity, etc. I came across an ad written by RIT student, Laura Prochilo, looking for local artists to photograph and interview for a photojournalism project. Remembering the countless times I was desperate for subjects and help with projects in school and liking the idea of getting some cool photos of my work/process, I replied.
So here are some of the shots Laura took. Also, if you click on her name above, it links to her Facebook page..really sweet photograph and a really cool person!

The painting I'm working on in these shots has come long way since this shoot, and there are some photos of it to come (*once its dried).

Where I'm at...

I think it's time I provided some sort of general recap, posted some images, and tried to work through the collection of ideas and thing I'm thinking about/working on.

Although I haven't been posting, I have been managing to make a fair amount of work considering I have 3 jobs and an internship to work around.

The most recent painting I posted has evolved quiet a bit. Worked in some darker colors, trying to establish a better sense of space. I also started adhering some plastic (trash) to the canvas and recently built up the surface with some more spackle. (I have a gallon of spackle now!!!)
I've been thinking a lot over the past few months about recycled material, unrecyclable materials, our carbon footprint, reducing dependence on petroleum based products, how one person can make an impact, etc. Grappling with this, and that as an artist how am I supposed to follow through with some of these ideas and still be doing something useful.

So I've been considering how I can use these more un-reusable, un-recyclable materials in painting...stryoform, plastic wrapping, wrappers from feminine products, etc. Trying to use these materials as a means of building up texture in a painting. (But still using the modeling paste I had originally been using...well, now spackle because its more affordable.)
But when are those materials just something to create and build up a surface and when do they start becoming important to the concept of the work. Frankly, I never expected to be using trash in my more and, as much as I am trying becoming more environmentally sound and want to be able to spread that message, I don't want to beat people over the head with it either....
While still keeping my other interests/inspirations relevant...nature, the universe, flow, process, etc...

Meanwhile...
I'm also making these handmade journals from materials I (more or less) already have lying around: drawing paper, newsprint, packing paper, cardboard, images from old calenders, maps, old prints from various undergrad classes, etc. And this is more a 'business prospect' i suppose.
I'm hoping to get an Etsy shop going in the next few months and start selling these books. And maybe some more craft or even food items (infused olive oil, hot sauce, etc.), as I've also been cooking a TON lately and am constantly experimenting with new things, making up new recipes, making more and more things homemade...reducing my dependence on the grocery stores/mass produced "food" items (big business).

So on one hand, I have this more "fine art" painting practice i'm trying to reestablish and rework through. On the other hand, I have this "craft" book making practice that i'm putting some focus into and would like to turn into a more serious business, if possible. So can do my own thing, and to hell with working 3 part time jobs..

There are some other projects lingering around: shrub sketchbook (coming soon), cd cover design (in progress), video stuff with James (on hold), learning how to use my sewing machine (75% failed attempts)...

Rant over...images coming soon to put some context (maybe) to some of these ideas...

Internship @ RoCo: Geometries

I'm not sure if I've posted about this here yet, but for the past month I have been interning that the Rochester Contemporary Art Center. Last week, I took part in setting up a legit show for the first time. It was TON of work, but really sweet experience. I'm learning a lot.

The show is called Geometries and it features work by two artists, Andy Gilmore (local to Rochester!) and Christopher McNulty.

Check the links, yo.

OMG I PAINTED TODAY!!

Can you tell I'm EXCITED!?!?!
I started this painting...over the summer? I think..
The usual process, built up some modeling past and had laid down some faint water based oils. When back in today with some cheapo acrylic paint and some spackle. I'd like to get some more spackle, work some more thick texture in there. Liking where the color is going thus far, but the red is starting to take over a bit.
I'm really glad to just have a space (albeit small) to work. It felt really great to painting tonight.
I also had an undergrad from RIT come over and take shots of me working...she's doing a project on local artists, making work, struggling to work towards their passions, etc. It was fun; she was real cool and it was nice to talk about art. Hopefully I'll have some of her pictures to incorporate with my blog/website.

Hopefully more progress to come...and more spackle!

2nd video: painting

Putting some effort towards the second video James and I made. It involves the process of making a collaborative painting. Frankly, most of the images aren't as strong as the first video with the water, but there are some interesting moments here too.

Stay tuned for more of this, and hopefully the most recent version (probably soundless) version of the water video.

Water Video--collaboration with James

.

So here's a stop motion video James and I made about 3 weeks ago, right before I moved. We filled a 50 gallon fish tank (currently housing my turtles) with water, dripped food coloring into it and this was the result.
Some sound to come? We'll see.
We'll also see how a long distance collaboration treats us..

Compressing Images: Water

About a week ago, James and I (magically in the same place) shot some images for a new video. This first one involved a 50 gallon tank of water and food coloring. Above is a teaser image.
I also foolishly deleted iMovie from my computer so time ago hoping to save space and ensure better machine performance (not like it matters, there's milk in logic board). Anyhow, I'm compressing the images to send to James. We're both pretty busy with real life stuff (moving, jobs, etc.) but hopefully it will become something complete.

**I'm so starved for creative stimulus and for a completed work space so posting something makes me feel at least a little productive.

PRFM recap

All and all, it was pretty successful:

-the new venue was very open and allowed for more moving around space
-although it was also open air and really really hot
-got a full table for the price of a half, because person at the other half of my table never showed up
-my table was directly across from a radio station's table, which blasted punk music all day. Both enjoyable and shitty, as I couldn't really talk to people without (a) yelling or (b) being (more) awkward (than usual)
-sold over half of the nice books!
-gave away about half the photos i brought
-sold the painted tee shirt and 1 of the painted tank tops
-sold a few prints
-didn't sell as many beer books as I would have liked
-sold 1 drawing
-sold a few things out of the supplies box, but again, not as much as I would have liked
-bought 'The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test" and a Etsy bandanna; and Ben got 3 sweet records and some oven mitts
-might be selling a book to 2 people via internet; one has already contacted me
-gave out some business cards
-gained more experience

332 photos- cropped!

Here are some photos for a soon-to-be stop motion film of a painting in progress. Using it for a collaborative project with James.
Later this week, I'm going to take advantage of some university computers and (clumsily) learn how to use a stop motion/film editing program.

Paintings: needs a good home!

I am probably not going to have space for these paintings in when I move, am goddamn tired of moving them around, and hate that they are sitting in storage.

I am looking for a good home (permanent or temporary) for these paintings!
Please let me know if you're interested and we'll work something out: willing to trade (especially for some else's art as i'm also tired of looking at my own), give, or loan. Whatever you want.

Water, oil on canvas, 4ftx4ft; built on frame

Black Holes/Dark Matter, oil on canvas board, about 4'8"x4'8"; built on frame, weighs about 80lbs

Origin, oil on canvas, roughly 4'2"x7'10"; built on frame, very lightweight considering size

Natural Lines: blue, yellow, purple, oil on canvas, roughly 4'2"x7'10"; currently rolled canvas so i'd would need to build hanging supports for it, would be very lightweight

Seriously, really would love for someone to be able to enjoy them!
